The 2015 Bush Excellence Award for International Teaching was presented to Dr. Paul J. Batista, associate professor in the Division of Sports Management for the Department of Health and Kinesiology on Thursday, April 23, at a dinner honoring international excellence hosted by Interim President Mark A. Hussey and the Texas A&M International Advisory Board.

Batista is a lawyer and a former county judge. His most significant impact in teaching has been through the study abroad program he developed to help students gain a greater understanding about international sport law, sport organizations, and the impact of sport on European society. Each summer since 2007 he has led more than 80 undergraduates to Germany, introducing them to the business of sport in Europe and immersing them in the local culture.

Building on the success of this program, Batista developed a field trip for undergraduate and graduate students to meet and discuss sport business activities with the Munich School of Business. This effort led to an exchange program where the Munich business school sends three to four students each year to study at Texas A&M for a semester. These experiences have been invaluable for students and serve as a model for other faculty seeking to develop study abroad programs.

The Bush Excellence Awards were established through the vision and support of President and Mrs. George Bush in 2002, with financial assistance from the George Bush Presidential Library Foundation. Since that time, 39 awards have been presented to Texas A&M faculty. To view recipients from previous years visit http://ppo.tamu.edu/Services/Initiatives/Bush-Excellence-Awards-for-Faculty.
