Fred A. Bonner, professor of higher education administration in the Department of Educational Administration and Human Resource Development, published a new book titled, Academically Gifted African-American Male College Students. The book, published by Praeger Publishers, features two case studies on academically gifted African-American male students who experienced different higher education contexts - the Historically Black College and University (HBCU) and Traditionally White Institution (TWI). The text compares and contrasts the two cases, noting personal characteristics and institutional approaches that contributed to their success. "This book attempts to provide a different narrative about the experiences of African-American males - a move away from a focus on deficits to an emphasis on assets," Bonner says.
