Texas A&M Judo Wins Texas State Collegiate Championships

The Texas A&M Judo team won the Texas State Collegiate Championships (32 points) over Texas Tech (2nd with 18 points), Texas State University (3rd with 15 points) and University of Texas (4th with 7 points).

Hosted at home in College Station, coached by Bob Perez and Dan Gomez (who is an assistant instructional professor in the department), eleven members fought their way to top four finishes. The State Collegiate Championships is the premier tournament for college competitors and serves as a warm-up for the 2011 NCJA National Collegiate Championships hosted by WestPoint Academy in New York.

Texas A&M Judo team members placed in every male weight division entered, winning 4 out of the 7, and easily giving the team the state title over fellow Universities Texas Tech, Texas State and University of Texas.

Earning Gold medals and the title of State Collegiate Champion were Seniors John Moore (+100kg division), Junior Caleb Lenard (100kg division), Freshman Matheus Groberio (81kg division), and Sophomore Aaron Gonzalez (60kg Division).

Silver medals and State runners-up were Senior Kevin Porter (90kg division), Sophomore Mark Hammond (73kg division), and Senior Adrianna Trevino (52kg division). 3rd place winners were Sophomore Ryan Wentzel (81kg division) and Graduate student Arash Pourhabib (66kg division).
