The Center for Sport Management Research and Education (CSMRE) will host the Title IX at 45 Summit on Friday, October 27 at the Memorial Student Center. The event is a collaboration between the Sport Management Program and the Women’s and Gender Studies Program and will feature an academic panel and guest speaker.

Title IX is a landmark legislation passed in 1979 that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in educational programs or activities receiving federal funding.

Dr. George Cunningham, CSMRE director and director of the Laboratory for Diversity in Sport, specializes in Title IX-related research. He discussed Title IX’s impact on the academic workplace.

“The law has implications for academic programming in schools — for all grade levels— for athletics and the opportunities girls and women have in that domain, and for sexual assaults on campus,” he said. “Thus, the law has a tremendous impact on the access people have to various activities, as well as their experiences in educational institutions.”

The event will feature a panel of Texas A&M administrators and coaches include: Hall of Fame coach Jo Evans, Title IX coordinator Jennifer Smith, Sr. Associate Athletics Director Lori Williams.

Dr. Erin Buzuvis, professor of law and director of the Center for Gender and Sexuality Studies at Western New England University, will be the keynote speaker. Dr. Buzuvis co-founded the Title IX blog, a definitive source for up-to-date information related to Title IX.

“Dr. Buzuvis is an exceptional scholar, internationally recognized for her critical insights regarding, gender, sexuality, and Title IX,” Dr. Cunningham said. “I hope people come away from the event with a better understanding of Title IX and the impact it has had and continues to have on our lives,” Dr. Cunningham said. “

The Title IX Summit is free to the public and will be held Friday, October 27 at 11 a.m. in the MSC rm. 2504. All attendees will receive a t-shirt and lunch. Registration information can be found on the event page.
